Your Personalized Coaching Tips

FROM AUTHOR/FOUNDER MIKE FOSTER

As a PQ4: Am I Wanted? you often fear being overlooked, excluded, or seen as a burden. But when you know your presence matters, you confidently take up space and create belonging wherever you go.

1. Track your exits.
Notice when you withdraw, ghost, or emotionally check out before anyone can reject you. Why? Preemptive abandonment might feel safe, but it keeps you stuck in the lie that you don’t belong.

2. Ask for what you want.
Clarity creates connection…invite, initiate, state your hopes.
Why? It affirms that your presence matters.

3. Invite others in.
Host, include, bring someone close.
Why? Creating belonging for others heals the part of you that felt unwanted.

Your Communication Style is:

THE COUNSELOR STYLE

Your Primal Question shapes your “native language.”

You tend to speak to others the way you want to be spoken to. That works great with people wired like you. It breaks down with people who have a different core need. Our research shows that your Primal Question impacts your communication style. It’s one of the many implications of your PQ results.

The 3 Main Primal Question Communication Styles are:

1. The Shepherd Style: Focused on clarity.
2. The Counselor Style: Focused on connection and belonging.
3. The Coach Style: Focused on significance and identity.

This section of your results shows two things:

  1. How you like to receive communication so it lands.

  2. How to communicate with others so you stop talking past them.

The Shepherd Style

Applies to:
PQ 1: Am I safe?
PQ 2: Am I secure?

Clarity is the New Comfort
Unclear feels unsafe. Pressure creates resistance.

Core Need:
Safety, Control

Shepherds need to know your words and tone won’t harm or destabilize them.

They’re listening for

Slow, calm tone. Predictability. Choice

What lands best for them

Clear plans. Steady delivery. Options instead of pressure

Say things like

“Let’s get clarity on this.” “Here’s the plan.” “I’ve got your back.”

Avoid

Surprises. Vagueness. Emotional pressure

If you don’t

They brace, shut down, or start controlling everything.

Translation Tip:

If you’re talking to a Shepherd, slow down, get specific, give choices, then move forward.

The Counselor Style

Applies to:
PQ 3: Am I loved?
PQ 4: Am I wanted?

Speak to the bond, not the benefit.
No connection, no reception.
You can be right and still lose the relationship.

Core Need:
Belonging

Counselors need to know they’re heard, valued, and connected.

They’re listening for

Presence. “Chosen-ness.” Heart talk, not only head talk

What lands best for them

Warmth before solutions. Emotional attunement. Relating, not only replying

Say things like

“I see you. I hear you. You matter to me.” “I love having you here.”

“That makes sense. I’m with you.”

Avoid

Surface talk. Cold or dismissive tone. Fixing while ignoring feelings

If you don’t

They shape-shift, shut down, or slip away.

Translation tip

If you’re talking to a Counselor, lead with connection, then move to clarity and action.

The Coach Style

Applies to:
PQ 5: Am I successful?
PQ 6: Am I good enough?
PQ 7: Do I have purpose?

Speak to the who, not the what.
Generic feedback feels like disrespect.
Vague critique creates war, not growth.

Core Need:

Significance

Coaches need to know their life and work matter, and you actually see them.

They’re listening for

Worth. Identity. Impact

What lands best for them

Specific respect. Direct, constructive feedback. Language that calls them up

Say things like

“This is what I see in you.” “You have my respect.” “Your greatness shows in…”

Avoid

Generic praise. Dismissive feedback. Vague criticism

If you don’t

They posture, self-promote, or armor up.

Translation tip

If you’re talking to a Coach, be specific, be direct, and name what you see, then challenge them with a clear next step.
